Since 1972 North Islington Law Centre has provided free
legal advice and assistance to people who live, work
or study in Islington.
Since
1997 our service has covered the whole borough as a
result of the closure of South Islington Law Centre.
As Islington Law Centre, we are part funded by Islington
Council for these
services.
We
have a specific commitment to people on low incomes
and to assist with those areas of law where no free
Legal Help is
available.
The
centre can give you advice if you live work or study
in the London Borough of Islington.
You can get telephone advice if you need help in the
areas of Housing,
Immigration,
Employment,
Education.and
Consumer problems
Unfortunately,
we are unable to offer a drop-in service. We are unable
to see clients without an appointment.

Booking
a place
You
can do this in person, by telephoning the LawWorks Administrator
to arrange an appointment (phone line open 7-9pm each
Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evening on 020 7697 9310)
or by
email. You will be given a time and date to come
for advice. We are sorry that we are unable to guarantee
the time at which you will actually be seen –
please be prepared to wait for a while. If you are more
than 20 minutes late, we may not be able to see you.
Please
note that the Centre is closed between 5pm and 7pm,
and you may not be able to get in until the time you
have been given. The first person to arrive will not
always be the first person to be seen. In cases of emergency
we cannot guarantee to offer an appointment at short
notice.
Do
let us know if you are not able to attend for any reason
– lots of people want advice, and we can offer
unused appointments to someone else. If you do not turn
up for an appointment without telling us in advance
we may decline to offer you a further appointment.

How
we can help
You
will be seen by a volunteer lawyer. They will be able
to listen to your problem, and read any letters you
may have received. They will be able to give you some
advice about what you could do.
They
may be able to help you write a letter. If you need
further help, they may be able to refer you on to another
agency. You can be seen up to 3 times about the same
problem, but you will probably see a different person
each time.
Please
note: these are advice sessions only – we are
not able to take on cases or act for you. We can provide
some help, and can tell you where you can go next.

LawWorks
advisors
The
advisor you will see will be a volunteer at the Law
Centre. All the volunteers are employed as lawyers at
commercial firms during the day.
The
Law Centre employs supervisors to co-ordinate each advice
session, and any follow up work. You will not be able
to speak to the advisor if you telephone or call in
to the Law Centre.

It
is a free service
You
will not be charged for the advice and help that you
receive at Islington Law Centre. Once an advisor has
considered your problem, we may suggest that you ask
a firm of solicitors to take your case on under the
Legal Help scheme. Depending on your circumstances,
you may be asked to make a contribution to the cost.
